Competitive sport


De Montfort University, Leicester (DMU) is an ambitious sports institution which provides an array of sporting opportunities for all our students.

However you wish to get involved within your sport, DMU has an offer for you! From gathering a group fo friends together to compete within a Social League, to becoming a part of a sports club and representing DMU in local leagues, British Universities and Colleges Sports (BUCS) or local, regional and national events, there will be something for you.

Many of our clubs have a dedicated sports coach and access to support from our strength and conditioning coaches throughout the year to support every student to achieve their goals in training and competition.

Social Leagues

Intramural sport is a fantastic way to get involved in sport whilst studying at DMU, and are known as Social Leagues.

You can get involved, whether your team is made up of course mates, housemates, society members, groups of friends – everyone is encouraged to get involved and have fun. We could even help get you into a team, just drop us an email at

Local league

We enter a variety of teams into local league competitions across the county, providing a competitive option close to campus that enables you to represent DMU and your sport and is embedded within our club programme here at DMUsport.

British Universities and Colleges Sports (BUCS)

BUCS is the national governing organisation for Higher Education Sport. They deliver over 50 sports (everything from archery to ultimate frisbee) comprising of a busy league programme, knock-out tournaments and one-off events. 

DMU have a wide range of competing in BUCS leagues on Wednesday afternoons and Sundays, where clubs have the opportunity to travel home and away, representing DMU and their club. During Welcome Week there is the opportunity to sign up to clubs and attend trials and tasters in order to be available for selection to teams. BUCS events normally take place at weekends throughout the academic year across a variety of sports. A full calendar of events can be found here. To request entry into these events please contact the DMUsport performance team on the email below.

If you play a sport, where DMU do not have a sports club, but wish to be entered into the appropriate BUCS competition, please get in touch with the BUCS performance team on the email address below.

 Individual competitions

For those sports that are not a part of the BUCS programme, nor is there an appropriate local league for them to get involved in with, DMUsport work with the club members and coaches wherever possible to identify the best competitive opportunities for them.

Across the variety of sports we support, this can either be Regional or National level competitions, a series of events or one-off competitions, and provide opportunities for those competing their very first time right up to elite level. 

Each year, the annual Varsity contest sees students from DMU compete against the University of Leicester in an array of sports from american football to swimming, archery and rugby.

The series is a fantastic opportunity to spectate, compete and cheer along DMU all students and staff are encouraged to come along to fixtures and support all of the teams.

Strength and conditioning

DMU has a team of dedicated strength and conditioning coaches based at The Watershed, providing accees to a strength and conditioning suite. They work with a number of DMU sports teams to develop fitness and strength to boost their performances in training and competition, and also work on a one to one basis with all of our DMU Sport Scholars.
