Competitive sport

At De Montfort University, Leicester (DMU) we value the importance of providing appropriate competitive sporting opportunities for our students. From those looking to compete for the very first time, through to those more experienced in competition, at DMU we have the opportunity for you...

Our competitive sport offer ranges from playing fixtures informally against other students within DMU, through to representing DMU as a team or individual at regional, national and international levels through competitive structures such as British Universities and Colleges Sports (BUCS).

Take a look at our individual, team and club competitive sport opportunities below to find out what's right for you.

Individual sport

DMUsport supports several clubs that participate in individual sport. These clubs are offered the same support as any of our team sports which can be found below.

If however you are interested in representing DMU in a competitive sport at a regional or national level that we do not currently have a club for, we would love to discuss this with you. Please contact us at

Social Leagues

You do not have to be a member of a sports club to enjoy taking part in competitive sport at DMU. If you want to get involved in competition without the extra committment, our Social League offer is the one for you.

Taking part in our Social League programme is a great way to partake in fun competition on a weekly basis against other DMU students. Whether your team is made up of course mates, housemates, society members, groups of friends – everyone is encouraged to get involved. We could even help get you into a team, just drop us an email at

So, what are you waiting for, create or join a team now and take part in this year’s Social Leagues

Club sport

Our sports clubs reresent DMU in three formats: Local Leagues, BUCS and Varsity. You can find out more about each of these below.

During Welcome Week there is the opportunity to sign up to clubs and for some, to attend trials and tasters in order to be available for selection to their teams. However, if you've missed this or want to know more information in advance of Welcome Week, please contact the club directly. You can find a full list of DMU Sports clubs here. If you're interested, use the link to contact the relevant committee and find out what competitive opportunities they have for you!

Local leagues

Many of DMUsport's clubs enter a number of teams into local league competitions every year to enable more students to represent DMU in their sport. The clue is in the name, 'local' leagues provide our clubs with a good standard of regular competitive sport close to campus, whether in Leicester or Leicestershire.

British Universities and Colleges Sports (BUCS)

BUCS is the national governing organisation for Higher Education Sport. They deliver competitions in over 50 sports (everything from archery to ultimate frisbee) comprising of a busy league programme, knock-out tournaments and one-off events against other universities.

DMUsport supports a wide range of clubs to compete in BUCS leagues on Wednesday afternoons and Sundays, where clubs have the opportunity to travel home and away to represent DMU. BUCS also run events that normally take place at weekends throughout the academic year across a variety of sports. See the full calendar of events

If you play a sport where DMU do not have a sports club, but wish to be entered into the appropriate BUCS competition, please get in touch with the BUCS performance team on the following email address

Each year, Varsity sees DMU take on the University of Leicester across a range of sports from American football to swimming, archery and rugby. Our University sports clubs battle it out, representing DMU in an attempt to win the bragging rights in Leicester!

The series is a fantastic opportunity to get behind 'Team DMU', spectate, compete and cheer! All students and staff are welcome and encouraged to attend fixtures and support our clubs.

Find up-to-date information on the current Varsity series.

Strength and conditioning

DMUsport clubs also have the opportunity to access a team of dedicated strength and conditioning (S&C) coaches to aid their preparation for and performance in competition. Our S&C Coaches work with a number of DMU sports teams within the S&C suite at the Watershed to develop fitness and strength to boost their performances in training and competition, and also work on a one to one basis with all of our DMU Sport Scholars.

Find out more, keep up to date and also pick up training tips from our S&C Coaches on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram!
