Student support

De Montfort University (DMU) has a dedicated student support team to help deal with any issues you may have before, during and after your studies. Whether it’s finding accommodation and settling in, to arranging academic support – the support team can help point you in the right direction.

At DMU, we are dedicated to creating an environment that focuses on students' health and wellbeing to help them to live a healthy, happy and productive life. That includes providing resources that support their development and studies, helping them to succeed and to achieve their full potential.

  1. Academic support

DMU has dedicated resources to provide extra academic support to students. Areas we provide help with include:
    • Essay writing (style, structure and referencing)
    • General written English (grammar, punctuation)
    • Research (skills and sources)
    • Time management
    • Verbal presentations
    • Revision and exams
  2. Personal tutor scheme

All DMU undergraduate and postgraduate students have a designated personal tutor throughout their programme. From the moment they join the university, students are encouraged to build a relationship with their Personal Tutor who, along with specialist services, as appropriate (e.g. The Student Gateway, Library and Learning Services, Student Advice Centres) will support and guide students in their journey to fulfil their academic potential and to achieve their academic and personal development goals.
  3. Student Finance

Our Student Finance team is here to provide students with advice on all aspects of money matters, including tuition fees, financial help and funding studies.

Located within Student Gateway, the Student Finance and Welfare Counter provides information and guidance on a range of student funding issues. The advice given is confidential and impartial. The team is responsible for:

    • Liaising with Student Finance England/Student Loans Company (and other student funding bodies, but not the NHS)
    • Confirming registration to release students maintenance payments
    • Confirming attendance to trigger tuition fee loan payments and sending ‘Change of Circumstance’ notifications.

The team also offer a variety of appointments to suit student needs that can be booked at their convenience.

  4. Disability advice and support

The Disability Advice and Support (DSA) team are committed to providing leading support to enable students to achieve their full potential. We know that each person's disability can affect them in different ways, so the support we offer is flexible and tailored to each individual. We aim to ensure that all our students have the opportunity to fully participate in their chosen course and university experience. We encourage students and applicants to inform us about a disability or medical condition as early as possible, so that relevant support can be arranged for their studies. This can include liaising with academics, the exams office and other key teams to ensure that all support is in place.
  5. Wellbeing

The Wellbeing team offers counselling to give students the opportunity to talk in confidence with someone who is impartial and separate from work, social and family life. The team also offers a fantastic range of #HealthyDMU masterclasses, including mindfulness and many more. These masterclasses are an opportunity to develop life skills such as managing pressure effectively and becoming more confident.
  6. Mental health support

The Mental Health Inclusion team offer support around practical, day to day solutions to various issues students may have. Coming to university is for the majority of students a fantastic experience. It's a chance to meet new people, have lots of new opportunities, achieve academic goals and work towards a career. We want to try and ensure that all students have a positive experience at DMU, so the Mental Health Inclusion team are an excellent resource for students to utilise.
  7. The Mandala Project

All students and staff have the right to feel respected, safe and supported. DMU and DSU are committed to providing and promoting an environment which is free from harassment and discrimination. Unwanted sexual comments, advances or assaults have no place at DMU or anywhere else. We have a team of trained professionals who are here to listen and ensure students receive the very best support and help.
  8. Adjusting to student life

Starting university is an exciting time, with lots of opportunities to take advantage of – some students can find this quiet daunting. The Transitions team can help students cope better with the challenges of academic study, independent living and thriving in a new environment.
  9. Careers and employability

Our Careers Team helps students become work-ready by providing opportunities that will make them professional, adaptable and business-aware, equipping them to succeed in a competitive world and make choices about the future they want. Opportunities offered include:
    • professional experiences such as placements and internships
    • work-readiness training, coaching and development
    • business insider visits
    • enterprise support
    • research and consultancy opportunities.
  10. Student Advice Centres

Each faculty has its own Student Advice Centre (SAC) to help, support and advise students with all learning support enquiries. Services that SACs provide to students include:
