DMUsport Campaigns

In partnership with De Montfort Students’ Union (DSU), DMUsport are dedicated to supporting various local, regional and national campaigns and causes which benefit students. From social media campaigns, to sporting activities and charity days, the pair will work in collaboration with support from student volunteers.

DMUsport are working to ensure all our activity operates in a Covid-19 safe way. Student leaders and coaches are up to date on all plans, and these will be announced on our web pages as soon as possible. Unfortunately plans have been impacted due to the recent Government announcements and we appreciate your patience as we translate these to our programmes as quickly as possible.

This Girl Can

This Girl Can is a Sport England nationwide campaign that was launched in January 2015 after research was carried out into female participation in sport and physical activity. It was found that despite increases in the overall number of people being active in England, women persistently remained less active than men. The campaign aims to get females, moving, regardless of shape, size and ability. They celebrate active females who are doing their thing no matter how they look, how well they do it or how sweaty they get so they can challenge the conventional idea of what exercise looks like and reach out to females of all backgrounds and ethnicities who feel left behind by traditional exercise.  You can find out more about the campaign here.

Since the launch of the campaign in 2015, DMU and DSU have celebrated This Girl Can each November. The campaign is celebrated at the university for a number of reasons and they include the following;

  • To help engage and break down barriers to participation for female staff and students who may not already be participating within sport and physical activity. Anyone can get involved in sport and physical activity – doesn’t matter their background, ethnicity, identity.
  • Provide a platform to highlight and celebrate female staff and students who are already involved in sport and their achievements.
  • Provide a platform to host discussions relating to women in sport.
  • Promote the physical activity opportunities that there are available at the university for female staff and students to get involved with.

As part of This Girl Can we are highlighting a number of DMU female staff and students who partake in sport, from our students who compete in our sport clubs to members of staff who do a 15 minute walk each lunchtime – let’s have a look at why they get involved.
