DMU Made's Engineers and Scientists in Business competition returns for 2026

Students from the Faculty of Technology, Arts and Culture are invited to take part in this year’s Engineers and Scientists in Business competition.

Returning for 2026, the competition enables students to develop entrepreneurial skills, tackle real-world sustainability challenges, and be in the chance of winning £3,000 in prize!

ESPB

Delivered across two interactive sessions, the programme will challenge students to work in teams to create innovative solutions to a sustainability-focused business problem.

Having come up with their solution, participants will develop and pitch their ideas to a panel.

Programme Dates

Week One – Tuesday 2 June, 5 – 7.30pm

The first session will introduce the sustainability challenge and give students the opportunity to form teams, brainstorm ideas, and begin developing their solution. Participants will work together using engineering, scientific, and creative approaches to create a proposal that will later be presented to a panel.

Between the two sessions, teams will continue working independently on their presentation and finalise their idea.

Week Two – Tuesday 23 June, 5pm–7.30pm

In the final session, each team will deliver a ten minute presentation to a judging panel, followed by a Q&A discussing their though process behind the solution.

Important Information

Students must attend both sessions to be eligible for the competition and prize fund. Teams or individuals who fail to attend both sessions will not qualify for prize money, regardless of contribution to the project.

Each team must include students from engineering or science disciplines, although students studying media-related courses are also strongly encouraged to participate.

Additional £150 Startup Bursary

Eligible UK and EU students who participate may also receive an additional £150 DMU Startup Grant designed to support future freelancing, self-employment, or business ventures.

To receive the bursary, students must provide either:

  • A Unique Tax Reference (UTR) number, or

  • A Business Registration Number (BRN)

Students who do not yet have one are encouraged to register as early as possible, as applications can take between 15–21 days to process.
