Start-up grant could put you on the road to Tallinn

DMU students are being offered a special start-up grant to help fund costs towards a DMU Global trip centred on freelancing, self-employment and business start-ups.

The £150 grant, added to a £150 grant already offered through DMU Global, means you can visit one of the world's most entrepreneurial and innovative cities - the medieval city of Tallinn in Estonia - for only £153. During the trip, participants will also have the option to spend a day in Helsinki, Finland, for a small additional cost.

All DMU home students (including EU students with settled or pre-settled status) are eligible to participate in this opportunity, irrespective of your faculty or course, providing you can provide a Unique Tax Reference (UTR) number, allocated since July 2025, or a reference number to prove you have applied for one via www.gov.uk.

If you don't already have a UTR, there's still time. Once you apply, it takes around 15 days for you to receive it. Full details on registering as a sole trader or registering as a business can be found on the gov.uk website.

In particular, DMU Made are looking for students with a demonstrable interest in freelancing and self-employment, or you may have a business idea that you would like to launch or grow. Your UTR number is considered as evidence of this. Additionally, first and second year undergraduates interested in doing a work placement in the future are encouraged to apply.

Tallinn is known throughout the world as one of the most pioneering locations for innovation and start-ups. In recent years, many entrepreneurs and businesses have relocated from Silicon Valley to the city, because of its rich and diverse capabilities in business. It’s a thriving city, known for digital nomads and creative freelancers.

During the trip, you will participate in a number of activities focused on freelancing, self-employment and entrepreneurship. There will also be content relevant to placement readiness, which means you will learn about personal branding, how to apply entrepreneurial skills within a placement role, the importance of sustainability and unique extracurricular skills that employees are looking for.

Applications are open now, and will close at 9am on Monday 2 February. Please go to our website for full details and the chance to apply for your place.
