De Montfort University Leicester (DMU) has partnered with the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) to launch a new degree apprenticeship aimed at developing the next generation of construction professionals.
The Level 6 Design, Construction and Management BSc Integrated Degree Apprenticeship is the first programme of its kind to be created by CIOB and marks a major step in its commitment to strengthening skills across the built environment sector.

Delivered in collaboration with DMU, the programme combines academic study with hands-on industry experience, enabling apprentices to earn while they learn. The course is fully funded for eligible students in England and is designed for those already working in trainee roles within the construction and design sectors.
Apprentices will develop the knowledge and expertise needed to lead and manage complex building and infrastructure projects, including overseeing design, coordination and procurement processes. The programme also offers experience across the full project lifecycle, from initial briefing and design through to delivery and handover.
There is no requirement for applicants to hold A-levels or equivalent qualifications, but they must be employed in a relevant trainee role to enrol.
Jill Cowley, Pro-Vice Chancellor of Extended Education and Director of DMU London, said the partnership reflected the university’s commitment to widening participation and supporting industry needs.
“The government has set ambitious targets to train thousands of new construction workers, so we’re proud to be working with the CIOB to develop the next generation of construction managers and skilled workers,” she said.
“DMU is an institution focused on improving access and outcomes for students from all backgrounds, finding the right route through higher level learning that helps fulfil their career ambitions.
“Degree apprenticeships offer students the opportunity to gain real-world experience by working on-site while also studying for a university qualification, which makes them immensely attractive and relevant.”
Rosalind Thorpe, Director of Education and Standards at CIOB, said the launch represented a significant milestone for the organisation.
“We are proud to be working with De Montfort University to launch our first degree level apprenticeship,” she said. “It is a significant step forward in strengthening our role in shaping the next generation of professionally competent construction managers, which the industry so desperately needs.
“Designing our own course, using insights from education experts as well as our own members, enables us to embed our ethical standards, technical expectations and professional pathways directly into higher education. This creates a clear route from apprentice to chartered membership.”
The programme has been designed with flexibility in mind, with teaching delivered online to allow apprentices to access learning from anywhere in the country while continuing to work.
Typical roles suited to the apprenticeship include Architectural Technologist, BIM Manager, Construction Manager, Project Manager and Technical Manager. Apprentices will often work within consultant design organisations such as architectural or engineering practices, while also collaborating closely with clients and construction teams.
