De Montfort University Leicester (DMU) has strengthened its global academic standing after securing rankings in three subject areas in the latest QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026.
The university is now ranked in Art and Design, Computer Science and Information Systems, and Economics and Econometrics, increasing from two subjects in the previous year and reflecting growing international recognition across a broader academic portfolio.

Art and Design enters the rankings for the first time, placed in the 201–300 band globally. The debut represents a significant milestone for the subject area, underlining the rising profile of DMU’s creative disciplines in an increasingly competitive global landscape.
Economics and Econometrics has also recorded a notable improvement, moving up from the 551–700 band last year to 451–500 in 2026. The uplift signals continued progress in teaching, research and reputation among both academic peers and employers.
Computer Science and Information Systems also remains ranked globally, following a series of recent successes in computing and artificial intelligence at DMU. Earlier this month, the university was named among the UK’s top 10 institutions for artificial intelligence in the Shanghai Global Rankings and 13th in the UK for research quality in Computer Science in the Times Higher Education subject rankings.
Professor Shushma Patel, DMU’s Pro Vice-Chancellor AI and Dean Faculty of Technology, Arts and Culture, said: “DMU has, from its inception as Leicester School of Art more than 155 years ago, embraced creativity and expression in all our subjects.
“The variety of the subjects recognised in this table shows the breadth of our teaching quality, which is informed by close collaboration with industry and delivered in our distinctive block approach, offering students one complete module at a time.”
The QS subject rankings are among the most influential global benchmarks in higher education, assessing institutions on academic reputation, employer reputation and research impact. They provide a detailed view of performance at subject level, offering insight into where universities are building international strength.
The latest results also sit within a broader period of positive momentum for DMU. The university has recently been recognised as one of the UK’s biggest improvers for social mobility, while its School of Law has been ranked among the very best globally for research quality, placing second in the UK and 13th in the world in the latest Times Higher Education subject rankings.
