Turkey and Syria earthquake


Like many people around the world, we are saddened by the news from Syria and Turkey as the devastating impact of Monday’s earthquake continues to emerge.

We understand that many of our community may be feeling anxious following the news, particularly those students and staff with personal connections to the region.

In line with our response to the war in Ukraine and other crises around the world, the university is collaborating with De Montfort Students’ Union (DSU) on plans for collection points for in-kind donations and we will provide more information on this soon.

DSU’s Opportunities and Engagement executive, Aashni Sawjani, who is leading on the DSU response, said: “We have had staff and students reach out to us expressing their wish to do something.

“The Turkish students on campus have already come out in big numbers to put up a stall in the Campus Centre to serve as an information desk around the crisis.

“To see our students be so proactive is a true reflection of what we as a union want in our future leaders.

“We will continue to work with the university to see how we can do more. In the meanwhile we commend the efforts of our students and staff and continue to provide the space they need to try to help in the best way they can.”
