Specific DMU students and graduates from Black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds are being invited to join DMU’s career-boosting mentoring programme.
Successful applicants will be able to join the final cohort of mentees for the Leicester’s Future Leaders Mentoring Programme, where everyone will be matched with a mentor from a Leicester business who will support their career journey.
The programme is open for applications from students who are on a placement year at DMU, or DMU graduates who work in Leicester.
The benefits of having a mentor have been well documented in terms of supporting career progression. Business bible Forbes found that employees who were mentored were promoted five times more often than those who weren't – and that mentees were 20% more likely to get a pay rise than those who did not take part in a mentoring programme.
As a mentee on the programme, you can:
1. Reflect on your career trajectory to date and plan for leadership roles
2. Be introduced to a new network of professionals
3. Identify your strengths and weaknesses with the help of a trusted mentor
4. Practise scenarios in a safe space to prepare for tough questions: for example, how to negotiate contracts, promotions, pay rises or bonuses
5. Develop your index of skills, knowledge and experience that can guide you throughout your career journey
