Institute of Energy and Sustainable Development

The Institute of Energy and Sustainable Development's (IESD) research has developed over 30 years to create the knowledge, skills and technology necessary to enjoy more energy-efficient and sustainable lives.

Our energy research is driven by both the European commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the built environment, in transportation and in industry; and our wider obligation to bring sustainable energy to the most needy communities in the world.

Our key strength is our integrated team of social scientists, engineers and building physicists who work together to develop knowledge of energy and resource use, at different scales from individual devices to national systems. In REF2014 70% of our research outputs were rated as ‘internationally excellent’ or ‘world leading’.

Teaching and Research

Our flexible master’s programme, accredited by the Energy Institute and CIBSE, allows you to study either by distance learning or attending within the field of energy, buildings and sustainable development (see the postgraduate study pages for more details). As a research group, our current portfolio of research projects, worth in excess of £3m, is funded by the UK Research Councils, EU and overseas funding agencies, energy utilities, industry, local and national government.
