Dr Zoe Redshaw - Skeletal muscle, stem cells and ageing
Skeletal muscle is a dynamic tissue, specialised for generating force and motion and represents 40% body mass in adult humans. In response to injury or physiological demand, muscle stem cell populations enable regeneration and muscle growth throughout most of life. With age however, we do see a gradual decline in this regenerative potential, ultimately leading to significant loss of muscle mass, strength and function.
As human lifespans increase, more of us may suffer this condition known as sarcopenia which leads to frailty, loss of independence and reduction in quality of life and can have metabolic disorders such as glucose intolerance associated with it.
My research focusses on understanding the mechanisms involved in muscle stem cell activation and cell fate decisions and what changes with age to reduce the regeneration potential of these cell populations.
