Leicester Institute for Pharmaceutical Innovation postgraduate and research study options

Students are offered opportunities to undertake Master’s by Research programmes under the LIPI, with a large selection of projects available in each of the research streams. Students engage with research at the forefront of scientific innovation and are able to directly influence future avenues of investigation.

Pharmaceutical Biotechnology at DMU provides detailed insight into the technologies that allow the development and production of biopharmaceuticals. With a high practical and in silico content, the course reviews the process from start to finish.

  • The Pharmaceutical Biotechnology course furnishes students with a truly diverse range of skills.
  • Students benefit from major investment in state-of-the-art laboratories and specialist equipment to match that used in the best industrial laboratories.
  • Recent positive feedback from industrial-based pharmaceutical companies describes this course as looking to the future in regards to where the industry wants to be in the years to come.

Quality by Design (QbD) is a science and risk-based approach for the development and manufacture of medicines and healthcare products that enables cost-effective delivery of products over their lifecycle. Our experts have a distinctive approach to providing high-quality learning and development materials, created through a collaboration between industry and academia.

Our QbD knowledge and expertise has been developed with the needs of the pharmaceutical and allied industries in mind, and our combined approach to driving QbD forward involves expertise and course content provided by a wide range of pharmaceutical industry experts, the UK regulator MHRA, and specialist material and equipment suppliers.

Industry contributors to QbD include: Pfizer, AstraZeneca, GlaxoSmithKline, Bristol-Myers Squibb; excipient suppliers BASF, Colorcon, Evonik, Ashland; equipment suppliers ColVisTec, GEA, Leistritz, Ytron-Quadro, Perceptive Engineering; software suppliers JMP, CAMO, Umetrics and regulators MHRA.

Our expertise in QbD is primarily delivered through our highly successful MSc course. We also offer research, consultancy, and bespoke training opportunities for industry.

Research students programme

Within the LIPI, students are able to take part in the Doctoral Training Programme (DTP) offered by the Doctoral College in topics related to the research group’s interests. This DTP offers training courses on research-focused analytical laboratory facilities as well as non-laboratory-based techniques. These involve an exemplary series of customised guidance programmes regarding the management, operation and applications of specialist instrumental laboratory facilities.

The Doctoral School provides generalised support for the researchers, including valuable advice on time management, prioritisation of work tasks, self-motivational skills, assertiveness and more, as well as the transferable development of scientific writing skills structured in terms of the future publication of DTP students’ research studies in reputable scientific journals.

The research students can attend a range of seminars and research meetings at DMU, enhancing their interaction with science in their own areas of research and beyond and giving them the chance of widening their views and interaction with science.

The research students are offered the chance to visit an overseas laboratory to perform some of their work via the #DMUglobal international experience scheme. They are also supported to present their data in international meetings, giving them the chance to network with scientists in their fields of interest.
