Blind dates with books, video game competitions and board games; Your DMU Community Week kicks off in style

From fierce video game battles to blind dates with books, students at De Montfort University (DMU) Leicester have been coming together for a week of activities designed to celebrate campus life and make new connections.

Your DMU Community Week kicked off on Monday (2 November), with a packed programme of free events giving students the chance to take a break from their studies, try something different and meet new people.

Campus Centre came alive with cheers and friendly banter as students challenged each other on Mario Kart, Street Fighter, Super Smash Bros and EA Sports FC 27, courtesy of the De Montfort Students' Union (DSU).

Having rounded off a comprehensive 6-1 victory on the latest EAFC, first-year Cyber Security student Karos said that the chance to spend time with fellow students was even better than the result.

He said:"Genuinely, DMU has been the best thing that's happened to me. I love it!

"This is a great way to socialise, get to meet new people and have fun together. And it doesn't hurt I've won 6–1."

Nearby, second-year Fashion Management student Wen Sun and second-year Accounting student Sining Xiong were enjoying a game of tennis on the Nintendo Wii.

Sining said that it was “a great break from studying,"

Elsewhere on campus, students were taking a chance on a mystery read at the Blind Date with a Book stand, where books were wrapped up so readers could discover something new without judging it by its cover.

Third-year Aeronautical Engineering student Harshneet Chiunth, who chose a thriller, said the activities reflected the welcoming atmosphere she had experienced since arriving at DMU.

Harshneet said: "I have lived in Leicester for three years since coming to DMU. It's a very welcoming university and I enjoy events like this.

"At the moment I am trying to read more so when I saw the 'date with a book' stand I picked up a thriller."

“I’m signed up to all DMU events so I spotted this on Instagram and came over,” said Sharam. “I love board games and I’m also loving the ‘blind date with a book’ stand.

Running until Friday Your DMU is themed around building a sense of belonging on campus.

Named 'Many Ways to Belong', these events have been curated to help you settle into the new academic year, make new friends and feel part of our wonderful student community.

Highlights still to come include a Diwali lights walk, a board game café, basketball and tiddlywinks competition, as well as workshops for academic wellbeing and building your CV.

The week is designed to encourage students to make the most of university life beyond their lectures, whether that's discovering a new interest, finding time to relax or simply striking up a conversation with someone new.
