The Faculty of Business and Law has partnered with the Enactus DMU student society to co-create a new space in the Hugh Aston building where students and staff can meet up on a regular basis to work on projects that aim to benefit our local community. Enactus DMU has projects focusing on a range of themes including fashion, dental poverty and more.
Tanjeet Kaur, President of the Enactus Society at DMU, said: “The new space will not just help make it easier for our student society to discuss, plan and implement projects that really benefit the local community, but also be an important hub where the staff and students here at Business and Law can gather and meet others in this BAL community.”
The space is partly based on the Hugh Aston building ground floor and also within the multi-million-pound new annexe to Hugh Aston called The Yard.
Dr Leanne De Main, Associate Dean Academic, said: “Through the years, the BAL faculty has invested tens of millions into creating first-class tech enabled teaching, learning and community spaces, all which have contributed greatly to enhancing our student experiences. So, it is great to see the spaces being used by our students for helping our local communities. We have also invested heavily in other areas including academic support, library learning resources and many more”.
Initiatives like these are part of the BAL faculty’s huge package of support for students who have had to go through a global pandemic these last couple years.
Dr Chris Odindo, Associate Professor Student Experience for BAL, said: “Supporting students to achieve their very best is our primary aim as a faculty, and we are certainly keen to make this bold experiment in how our student and staff community chose to use the spaces a success.”

The BAL faculty will continue to focus on supporting students to form connections both in online and physical spaces. Indeed, a key ambition of the faculty is to co-create with students even more spaces where they can continue to make use of the excellent learning opportunities across all the programmes, form thriving communities, and of course engage in the kind of intellectually stimulating discussions the faculty as come to see and expect from BAL students and staff.
