CLASS OF 2019: Placement students prove their worth on work experience

High-flying students graduating from the Leicester Castle Business School at De Montfort University Leicester (DMU) have credited their placement year experiences for helping them to secure jobs with the likes of Barclays and Howdens.

All Business and Law students at DMU have the opportunity to take a paid placement year in industry before their final year, to gain valuable experience and enhance their CV.

Celebrating years of hard work at today’s graduation ceremony, Accounting and Business Management student Aaroon Younis told how he landed his job in the corporate banking division at Barclays after developing skills on his placement.

“I did a placement in Nottinghamshire Foundation NHS Trust and I’d recommend it to anyone,” said Aaroon – who also won the award for ‘Best Joint Honours Accounting and Business Management Student’.

“When I was applying for my graduate role, I was able to relate their questions back to examples I’d experienced on placement. It develops your skills, helps you apply what you have learned and helps you get more an idea of what area you want to work in.”

Accounting and Finance student Shannon Wilmott impressed her bosses so much while on placement with FTSE 250 company Howdens, she was offered a graduate role with the firm.

She said: “I had the placement and then before Christmas, they came up to Leicester to see me and offered me the role. It’s such a great place to work.”

For another graduate, work experience wound up being much closer to home than she could have ever imagined when she got a part-time job in the HR department at DMU while completing her studies.

Charlotte Hussey, who achieved a First in HR Management, said: “I really developed my knowledge by working and studying at the same time. I would recommend doing a placement or getting work experience to everyone. It gives you a whole new perspective when you are able to put what you’ve learnt into practice.”

Also collecting his degree today was entrepreneur Devante Mango, who last year set up his own digital marketing business, Opulent AM.

Devante, who got a 2:1 in Accounting and Business Management, said the modules he studied have undoubtedly helped him grow his business.

“Opulent AM is a digital marketing and social media brand agency – we build brands for small to medium-sized businesses.

“I feel like the things I learnt on my course have helped me expand the company. The accounting side of things has taught me how to manage my finances and run a business from a financial aspect.”
