The volunteers we are looking for

We are looking for healthy type 1 and type 2 people between 18 and 40 years old, with no serious health problems other than their diabetes. So, for example, heart and breathing problems will stop you being a recruit and you must not join the study if you have epilepsy, arthritis, very high blood pressure or the tendency for fractures. We will ask you about your medication and some medicines, such as warfarin may prevent you from taking part. Volunteers should not have a serious problem with hypoglycaemia.

We need those who are NOT superfit already because the idea is to run a gentle exercise training program and measure the improvements over six to twelve weeks. The main programme will run for 6 weeks and then we hope people will return for a second HbA1c test after 12 weeks.

This study has university ethical approval and is run by a large team including physiologists, a pharmacologist, a diabetology consultant and a sports medicine consultant. The lab has been appropriately risk assessed and has the facilities needed for first aid, phlebotomy and links for medical help, should that ever be needed.
