Mechanical Engineering BEng/MEng (Hons)

Develop the skills and knowledge needed to become a professional engineer by studying the design, development, installation, operation and maintenance of just about all movable parts, and prepare for a career in one of the most diverse and versatile engineering fields.

Overview

Watch: Anna Strzelecka, VC2020 Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering, talks about the benefits of studying engineering at DMU.

Mechanical engineering touches virtually every aspect of modern life. It’s at the forefront of developing new technologies for a multitude of industries including transport, healthcare, construction, and robotics.

You will learn fundamental skills and knowledge by studying core modules such as Engineering Mathematics, Mechanical Principles and Machines and Mechanisms. You will be able to take optional modules such as Design for 3D Printing, Bioengineering and Emerging Materials and Processes to tailor the course to your interests. Modules such as Product Design, Project Management and Engineering Business Environment equip you with the professional skills you need to work in industry.

Our teaching and course content are informed by our research in diverse areas, including aerodynamics, fluid systems, transportation, manufacturing and sustainable development.

You can study Mechanical Engineering either as a three-year BEng (Hons) programme, or as a four-year integrated master’s. At the end of year three, you have the option of graduating with a BEng or continuing your studies for a further year for a MEng, subject to meeting the progression requirements.

Key features

  • Benefit from dual accreditation from the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) and the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET)*. This will help you start your journey towards becoming a Chartered Engineer.
  • Study a range of topics including computer-aided design, thermodynamics and heat transfer, solid mechanics, dynamics and control, materials engineering and processing and fracture mechanics.
  • Access specialist facilities, such as our control and dynamics laboratories, mechanics and materials laboratories, engine test cell and Rohde and Schwarz embedded systems laboratories.
  • Join student societies such as DMU Racing and take part in Formula Student, an annual initiative set up by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers which challenges universities to design, build and race a single-seat racing car.
  • Explore professional opportunities by taking a placement year in industry. Mechanical Engineering students have undertaken placements at large organisations including Cummins, Caterpillar and the National Grid.
  • Open your career prospects across a range of fields, including aerospace, automotive, defence and energy, product manufacturing and the food and beverage industries.

*Due to delays relating to the pandemic, we are currently undergoing the process of renewing our accreditation and expect to have this in place for the start of the 2022/2023 academic year.

My degree has given me a head start in life and Iā€™m really grateful to my professors who have been really supportive and encouraging.

Mechanical Engineering is taught by knowledgeable and experienced staff giving you the opportunity to gain a sound understanding of engineering principles along with the professional skills that will enable you to study successfully and embark on a rewarding career.

A variety of techniques are used throughout the Mechanical Engineering course with an emphasis on lectures, supporting tutorials and laboratory classes.

Student-centred learning takes place through the research and presentation of findings, report writing, individual and group assignments and practical work-based exercises to develop your skills and understanding.

You will have access to computer and experimental laboratory facilities throughout the course, including industry-standard 3D design and FEA Analysis software.

You will normally attend around 12–16 hours of timetabled taught sessions each week, and are expected to undertake around 20 further hours of directed independent study and assignments as required.

This course is accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) on behalf of the Engineering Council for the purposes of fully meeting the academic requirement for registration as an Incorporated Engineer. Students who successfully graduate with this degree may, with the appropriate further learning, meet the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered Engineer.

The BEng (Hons) programme is CEng accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET)* and fulfils the educational requirements for Chartered Engineer when presented with an accredited MSc. In addition the programme meets the educational requirements for registration as an Incorporated Engineer.

*Due to delays relating to the pandemic, we are currently undergoing the process of renewing our accreditation and expect to have this in place for the start of the 2022/2023 academic year.

Facilities and features

Mechanical Engineering Laboratory

Our mechanical engineering laboratory is designed for the study of thermofluids, solid mechanics and dynamics. It also has an area with machine tools for the manufacture of student designs.

There is a purpose-built engine testing facility to measure engine performance and emissions, and our energy laboratory is available to conduct thermofluid experiments relevant to mechanical engineering.

The materials laboratory has facilities for material microstructure examination and properties testing. Equipment incudes microscopes and various properties testers for tensile, fatigue, wear, corrosion, hardness, and impact testing.

The dynamics and control laboratory allows you to study gyroscope theory, vibration theory, non-linear control and inertia bending.

Listen to Professor Rick Greenough, Energy Systems explain the importance of heat pumps and how they work in our Energy Lab.

More flexible ways to learn

We offer an equitable and inclusive approach to learning and teaching for all our students. Known as the Universal Design for Learning (UDL), our teaching approach has been recognised as sector leading. UDL means we offer a wide variety of support, facilities and technology to all students, including those with disabilities and specific learning differences.

Just one of the ways we do this is by using ‘DMU Replay’ – a technology providing all students with anytime access to audio and/or visual material of lectures. This means students can revise taught material in a way that suits them best, whether it's replaying a recording of a class or adapting written material shared in class using specialist software.

Library and learning zones

On campus, the main Kimberlin Library offers a space where you can work, study and access a vast range of print materials, with computer stations, laptops, plasma screens and assistive technology also available.

As well as providing a physical space in which to work, we offer online tools to support your studies, and our extensive online collection of resources accessible from our Library website, e-books, specialised databases and electronic journals and films which can be remotely accessed from anywhere you choose.

We will support you to confidently use a huge range of learning technologies, including the Virtual Learning Environment, Collaborate Ultra, DMU Replay, MS Teams, Turnitin and more. Alongside this, you can access LinkedIn Learning and learn how to use Microsoft 365, and study support software such as mind mapping and note-taking through our new Digital Student Skills Hub.

The library staff offer additional support to students, including help with academic writing, research strategies, literature searching, reference management and assistive technology. There is also a ‘Just Ask’ service for help and advice, live LibChat, online workshops, tutorials and drop-ins available from our Learning Services, and weekly library live chat sessions that give you the chance to ask the library teams for help.
