Energy Engineering BEng/MEng (Hons)

Develop specialist knowledge about conventional and renewable energies for power generation and modern energy storage solutions. This degree is underpinned by traditional engineering principles and will equip you for diverse roles in the energy sector.

Overview

The production and utilisation of energy is a key global issue. Governments and industry are becoming increasingly aware of balancing energy production and utilisation with the need to be environmentally conscious and energy efficient.

This course addresses energy production, storage and utilisation. Develop your understanding of the production and efficient use of conventional and renewable energy sources for power generation, and modern energy storage solutions, complemented with elements of energy economics. You will gain a strong understanding of key principles in engineering, mechanics, electricals and electronics, and will explore specialist topics in modules including Sustainable Buildings, Energy for Transport Applications and Low Carbon Energy Technology.

You will have the opportunity to gain industry experience by undertaking an optional work placement. Recent placements have taken place at companies such as Cummins, Network Rail and Caterpillar. We also place a strong focus on employability through industry relevant modules, including Energy Economics and Policy and Project Management.

Graduates of this course go on to a vast range of careers in production, utilisation, energy storage and management, design, research and development, environment control and policy making.

You can study Energy Engineering either as a three-year BEng (Hons) programme, or as a four-year integrated master’s. At the end of year three, you have the option of graduating with a BEng or continuing your studies for a further year for a MEng, subject to meeting the progression requirements.

Entry criteria

  • A typical offer is 112 UCAS points (120 UCAS points for MEng) from at least two A-levels including Mathematics or Physics at grade C, or
  • Engineering or Physics BTEC National Diploma/ Extended Diploma at DMM (DDM for MEng)

Plus, five GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including English and Mathematics or equivalent.

Alternative qualifications include:

Pass in one of the following QAA accredited Access to HE course with at least 15 level 3 credits in the relevant subject at distinction:

  • Engineering Science and Mathematics

English and Mathematics GCSEs are required as a separate qualification as equivalency is not accepted within the Access qualification.

Mature students

We welcome applications from mature students with non-standard qualifications and recognise all other equivalent and international qualifications.

English language

If English is not your first language then an IELTS score of 6.0 overall with a minimum of 5.5 in each component (or equivalent) is essential.

English Language tuition, delivered by our British Council accredited Centre for English Language Learning, is available both before and throughout the course if you need it.

You will be taught by a team of expert staff with an excellent track record in teaching and in energy-related research. You will be supported to gain a sound understanding of the principles of energy engineering, along with the development of design, problem solving and professional skills that will enable you to study successfully and embark on a rewarding career. 

Teaching is delivered using a variety of techniques, including lectures, tutorials, case studies and laboratory classes. Universal Design for Learning (UDL) will be implemented to support your learning with easy access to lecture notes, recorded lectures and additional online learning materials.

Our laboratories are equipped for teaching and learning energy technologies and development of fundamental engineering skills. Students are exposed to a number of industry-standard software and have access to computer and experimental laboratory facilities throughout the course. 

Assessment usually consists of exams and coursework, but may vary between modules. Coursework assessment may include practical laboratory work, reports, essays or verbal presentations. 

Students will normally attend approximately 12–16 hours of timetabled taught sessions each week, and are expected to undertake around 20 further hours of directed independent study and assignments as required.

 

Accreditation

This course is accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) on behalf of the Engineering Council for the purposes of fully meeting the academic requirement for registration as an Incorporated Engineer. Students who successfully graduate with this degree may, with the appropriate further learning, meet the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered Engineer.

The BEng (Hons) programme is CEng accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET)* and fulfils the educational requirements for Chartered Engineer when presented with an accredited MSc. In addition the programme meets the educational requirements for registration as an Incorporated Engineer.

*Due to delays relating to the pandemic, we are currently undergoing the process of renewing our accreditation and expect to have this in place for the start of the 2022/2023 academic year.

Facilities and features

Mechanical Engineering Laboratory

We place a strong emphasis on practical skills, and our Engineering facilities include a dedicated energy laboratory where you will be able to conduct experiments in a stimulating environment. You will have access to equipment such as ground source and air source heat pumps, and be able to explore how such systems can be used for cooling.

The space allows staff and student researchers to build and test devices and systems crucial to their energy-related projects, such as low carbon transport, heating and light, energy storage and smart grids.

Library and learning zones

On campus, the main Kimberlin Library offers a space where you can work, study and access a vast range of print materials, with computer stations, laptops, plasma screens and assistive technology also available. 

As well as providing a physical space in which to work, we offer online tools to support your studies, and our extensive online collection of resources accessible from our Library website, e-books, specialised databases and electronic journals and films which can be remotely accessed from anywhere you choose. 

We will support you to confidently use a huge range of learning technologies, including the Virtual Learning Environment, Collaborate Ultra, DMU Replay, MS Teams, Turnitin and more. Alongside this, you can access LinkedIn Learning and learn how to use Microsoft 365, and study support software such as mind mapping and note-taking through our new Digital Student Skills Hub. 

The library staff offer additional support to students, including help with academic writing, research strategies, literature searching, reference management and assistive technology. There is also a ‘Just Ask’ service for help and advice, live LibChat, online workshops, tutorials and drop-ins available from our Learning Services, and weekly library live chat sessions that give you the chance to ask the library teams for help.

More flexible ways to learn

We offer an equitable and inclusive approach to learning and teaching for all our students. Known as the Universal Design for Learning (UDL), our teaching approach has been recognised as sector leading. UDL means we offer a wide variety of support, facilities and technology to all students, including those with disabilities and specific learning differences.

Just one of the ways we do this is by using ‘DMU Replay’ – a technology providing all students with anytime access to audio and/or visual material of lectures. This means students can revise taught material in a way that suits them best, whether it's replaying a recording of a class or adapting written material shared in class using specialist software.

Graduates of this course are expected to go on to careers in production, utilisation, storage and management of energy, design, research and development, environment control and policy making.

DMU Engineering graduates have gone on to work at a range of high-profile national and multinational organisations, including Airbus UK, BMW, Cummins, Ricardo, Vodafone and Siemens.

DMU Engineering students have toured manufacturing laboratories in Norway, visited the Power Conversion, Intelligent Motion exhibition in Germany and taken part in the International Student Workshop in Poland.

While overseas DMU Global opportunities are not currently possible, DMU will continue to review government advice and if travel is permitted, we hope to offer a small number of extra-curricular opportunities in the summer of 2021.
