International Year Zero (IYZ)


International Year Zero

Get the perfect start to your degree at DMU with the International Year Zero (IYZ). You will take an extra year of study at DMUIC in order to complete your degree at DMU. Students who take the IYZ will continue to the first year of study of their chosen International Incorporated Bachelor's degree programme at DMU.

  1. Art and Design


    DMUIC offers a new way to start a prestigious Art and Design degree at DMU.

    Explore your creativity while creating a great portfolio – it’s the ideal way to start your studies in art and design as you continue to a sought-after degree programme.

    based in DMU’s award-winning Vijay Patel Building, you will be empowered by the contemporary and striking space, with access to diverse facilities where you can experiment, develop and flourish.

    After you have completed your IYZ, you can continue your studies in one of our Art and Design degrees, including Architecture, Fashion Design, Fine Art, Footwear Design, Graphic Design, Interior Design and Product Design. 

    On this course you will:

  2. Business and Law


    The modules on IYZ: Business and Law will allow you develop the critical skills, knowledge and ability to succeed if you aspire to be one of the next generation of business leaders.

    You’ll examine real-life business case studies to learn corporate strategy, analyse successful marketing campaigns and gain a solid grounding in management theory and economics.

  3. Engineering and Computing


    Fast-paced, exciting and challenging, the computing or engineering sectors have plenty to offer ambitious students – high job satisfaction, above-average salaries and a choice of sectors in which to work. 

    Combining theory with the practical experience, the Engineering and Computing IYZ is taught by lecturers who have expertise in teaching science and maths to those who have not studied it in depth before.


    You will receive a solid grounding in programming, maths and science as well as practical engineering skills to give your undergraduate study at DMU the best start.

  4. Life Sciences

  5. Media


    Whether your aspirations are to be a journalist, to create films or to develop, design and operate the latest broadcasting technology systems, the IYZ: Media programme is the perfect start.


    Media covers a vast range of subjects, from the highly practical to the theoretical. This IYZ gives you an excellent grounding in all aspects of media and communication before you continue at DMU’s Leicester Media School, one of the UK’s leading centres for the creative industries. 

    On this course you will:

  6. Pharmacy


    There is huge demand for pharmacists all around the world and qualified pharmacists have a variety of exciting and challenging career choices in the industry – for example, they can work alongside family doctors, in busy hospitals or pursue medicines research.

    DMU has invested millions in facilities so you will have access to the very latest laboratory equipment. Our pharmacy school is home to world-leading academics who are conducting life-changing research.

    DMU's School of Pharmacy has been producing talented pharmacy graduates for more than 100 years. Once you complete the IYZ, you can continue with your degree of choice in this exciting area.

    Once you progress to the MPharm you will need to complete your enhanced DBS application. All Year Zero and IYZ MPharm students will need to complete a self-declaration by end of teaching week 3 after enrolment, and self-declaration completed by end of teaching week 1 in years 2 to 4 at the latest. Failure to engage with this process will result in a review of your continued registration, the normal outcome of which will be discontinuation of your registration from the YZ or IYZ MPharm programme. For international students a certificate of good conduct from your home country is required in lieu of a DBS check.

Entry requirements

English language

To be considered for a place at DMUIC you need to meet our standard of English Language requirements.  Our courses require an IELTS of 5.5 or equivalent, with a minimum of 5.5 in every component. Our IYZ Pharmacy course requires an IELTS of 6.5 or equivalent, with a minimum of 6.0 in every component.

If you do not meet these English Language requirements, we can offer you a pre-sessional English course to be studied immediately before you enter the first/second stage of your chosen programme:

  • If you have an IELTS 5.5 (with any component below 5.5), you will be offered a six week pre-sessional English course immediately preceding your entry to the programme.
  • If you have IELTS 5.0 (with no component below 4.5), you will be offered a six week pre-sessional English course immediately preceding your entry to the programme.
  • If you have IELTS 4.5 (with no component below 4.0), you will be offered a twelve week pre-Sessional English course immediately preceding your entry to the programme.

Academic qualifications
