My name is Aftab Sayed. I play cricket and badminton, and I’m also an Activator* for cricket, badminton and occasionally volleyball at DMU.

How did you discover your sport and how did you get involved at DMU?

Cricket has always been part of my life — it’s something I grew up with. Badminton came naturally because I enjoy competitive and fast-paced sports.

When I joined DMU, I went straight into trials in my first year. From there, I kept progressing — first as a player, then becoming more involved in helping run sessions, and now stepping into leadership roles.

What do you love about playing sport at DMU?

What I love most is the sense of belonging. Being part of a team pushes you to improve, but it also gives you a second family.

As both a player and an Activator, I enjoy building an environment where everyone feels supported, motivated, and confident to grow.

What are your memories of previous Varsity events, and how are you feeling about competing this time?

I’ve played Varsity twice, starting from my first year — first as a player, and now I’m stepping up as a captain. Competing at DMU Varsity is always special. The atmosphere, the pride, and the support from students make it unforgettable.

This year feels different. As captain, there’s more responsibility — but also more motivation. I’m proud of the journey from representing the team to now leading it.

How has playing sport added to your experience of uni?

Sport has completely shaped my university experience. It’s given me lifelong friendships, leadership opportunities, and a strong support network.

From first-year nerves to leading a team, sport has been the biggest part of my growth at university.

Has playing sport at DMU helped you in your life more widely?

Definitely. It’s improved my resilience, confidence and time management.

Becoming a captain has also strengthened my leadership, as well as my communication and decision-making skills. Sport has also been vital for my mental wellbeing — it keeps me focused, disciplined, and positive.

*An Activator is a student volunteer who runs sessions on the DMUactive programme (DMUactive: Free, recreational sport and activities).
