The Interim Vice-Chancellor of De Montfort University Leicester (DMU) has said that further relaxation of COVID-19 restrictions in Leicester is 'good news for the city'.

Professor Andy Collop said: “This is good news for the city. I think we have seen the best from Leicester over the past few weeks and the city council has shown strong leadership in making sure the city is as safe as it can be.

He continued: “The restrictions which have been in place are sensible measures and I think it has been the right thing to do to show caution in easing them because Leicester is now arguably more prepared than many other places to keep transmission at the lowest possible rate.

“More than half our students from the UK come from Leicester and the surrounding area and we work in close partnerships with the city council, with businesses across the city and organisations like Curve and Leicester City. There is something very special about Leicester, its strength, diversity and sense of community.

“We’ve seen it all in the past few weeks and months and we’ve been proud to be able to help throughout, making and donating PPE, supporting volunteers out in the community and training nurses to serve the NHS.

“We are tremendously excited to be able to share the city we love with all our with all our new and returning students as they arrive in September to start the new academic year, as planned, on Monday 5 October.”
