The Confucius Institute (CI) at De Montfort University celebrates a significant achievement as its volunteer Mandarin teachers excelled at the Finals of the 5th Chinese Teaching Championship for English Speaking Countries in Europe. Three out of nine DMU entrants excelled through rigorous preliminary and semi-final rounds to reach the finals, securing multiple awards including Second Prize (Runner-up; Adult Students Category), Creative Teaching Award (Adult Students Category), and Merit Award (Primary & Secondary School Students Group).

The winning teachers, Mr. Zhisheng Zhao, Miss Sihan Wu and Miss Xinjia Huang, demonstrated cutting-edge pedagogy by integrating AI-assisted learning tools to personalise instruction, designing interactive modules that blended language learning with cultural themes such as Chinese porcelain art, and involving students directly in creating authentic learning materials through video projects. These approaches impressed the judges and showcased a forward-thinking, student-centred teaching philosophy.

“Our goal was to make language learning dynamic and culturally immersive,” said Mr. Zhao. “Using AI, we provided instant feedback, while cultural projects like porcelain design made the language come alive. Having students co-create materials was key—it turned them from learners into active participants.”
This achievement is a direct reflection of DMU’s strategic commitment to educational excellence, global engagement, and community impact. “Our preparation was a team effort, supported by the CI’s focus on continuous professional development,” said Miss Sihan Wu. “This competition allowed us to refine methods that we now bring directly back to our classrooms at DMU and the local schools in Leicester, enhancing the learning experience for all our students.”

This accomplishment solidifies DMU’s position as a leading hub for Chinese language education and cultural exchange in Leicestershire. It highlights how specialised language programmes are vital to delivering a comprehensive, internationally-minded education and fulfilling the university’s role as a civic and global institution.
