Postgraduate students from De Montfort University’s London campus got an inside look at how data, technology and information are used in real-world business decisions thanks to a visit to global financial technology company, Bloomberg.
Students from DMU London’s MSc Responsible Data Analytics and Global MBA with Responsible Leadership visited Bloomberg’s European headquarters, in the heart of the City of London, for a special tour and learning session hosted by Gonçalo Santos, Bloomberg for Education's Head of University Relations for Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia-Pacific.

The session linked directly to students’ work on data analysis, business intelligence, finance and strategy, while giving them a broader understanding of Bloomberg’s work and the central role that technology and information play in modern organisations.
The visit also gave students experience of a professional environment outside their normal classroom setting, helping them understand the range of roles and skills needed by an organisation such as Bloomberg and what employers expect from graduates entering the workplace.
Dr Swati Virmani, Head of Academic at DMU London, said: “At DMU London, we want students to experience learning beyond the classroom. Visits such as this give them an invaluable opportunity to see how data, technology and business decision-making come together within a leading global organisation.
“What made this visit particularly valuable was how directly it connected with what our students are studying. For our data analytics students, Bloomberg brings to life the role of data, technology and responsible decision-making. For our MBA students, it provides a window into strategy, finance and decision-making within a complex global organisation.”
Dr Virmani added: “Being based in London gives us an exceptional opportunity to connect our students with organisations operating at the forefront of their industries.
“These experiences broaden students’ career aspirations and help them understand the skills they will need as future professionals.”
Students from the two postgraduate programmes also had the opportunity to network and collaborate with one another during the visit, exchanging perspectives outside their usual classroom and strengthening the wider DMU London postgraduate learning community.
They were accompanied by Dr Irina Gokh, Associate Head of Education at DMU Leicester; Dr Swati Virmani, Head of Academic at DMU London; DMU Global Marketing Officer Johnny Morris; and academics Dr Samar Wazir and Molly Simmons.
The visit forms part of DMU London’s wider approach to giving students regular opportunities to engage with employers, practitioners and organisations alongside their academic studies.
It also continued a relationship with Bloomberg which saw Mr Santos visit DMU’s Leicester campus earlier this year, when he demonstrated a live Bloomberg Terminal workflow tracking vessels and oil prices through the Strait of Hormuz.
During this week’s visit, he revisited the same exercise, using live data to explore how the situation had changed in the intervening months and showing how developments around the world can feed through into markets and business decisions.
