Students have been recognised for their spectacular work at their innovative and inspirational end-of-year show at De Montfort University Leicester (DMU).
The work of phenomenal artists and designers has been praised by the thousands of visitors who have already flocked to the week-long Degree Show.
Footwear Design student Tarik Tanriokolu
This includes industry experts, VIPs, family and friends and members of the public who have used social media to congratulate the students on their creative artwork and designs.
The Degree Show – which continues until Thursday - also sees thousands of pounds and industry prizes being given out to more than 80 final-year students.
It features thousands of pieces of work from Arts, Design and Humanities and Technology students spread over several Campus buildings.
Footwear Design student Tarik Tanriokolu won the Christopherson Collection Prize for his shoe designs inspired by Turkish football culture. His work includes shoes for a football manager and football player based on their team colours.
The Christopherson Collection awards are selected by Heads of Schools and associated colleagues as the most original and creative work produced by DMU students.
Tarik, who was born in Germany to Turkish parents, said: “The award came as a complete surprise, I had no idea I’d won.
“It’s my first award in Footwear so it was a bit overwhelming, but it feels really nice.
“I’m a big football fan and I’m interested in sports fashion so it seemed like the most obvious design inspiration for me.”
Tarik, 28, previously worked for Adidas and the company sponsored the first two years of his degree in Germany before he moved to Leicester for his final year at DMU.
He said: “I’ve really enjoyed my time at DMU, I’ve learnt so much. I’ve been taught so much about the creative process and my tutors were amazing.
“When I started I had very limited ideas, but I’ve learnt to broaden my approach and think more deeply about things.”
Abigail Rudge, a final-year Fine Art student, has her photo montage on display at the DMU Degree Show, which features seven photos of different imaginary scenes.
The 21-year-old said: “My final-year project looks into my subconscious mind, looking at how my dreams fit into reality.
“It shows what’s in my head; it was a chance for me to express what is in my imagination.”
Abigail, who is planning to travel before going on to study an MA in Animation, added: “My tutors have been great, they’ve taught me to accept other people’s views and I’ve enjoyed the great access to technology at DMU.”
Final-year Architecture student Nish Tailor
Architecture student Nish Tailor, 21, is displaying his work inspired by his #DMUglobal trip to Berlin in November. He designed a new Engineering School in Berlin after visiting a nearby Military Tower.
He said: “I am really proud of my work. It mimics nature as it is inspired by how a colony of bats flies.
“The #DMUglobal trips were a huge help to my studies as they opened my mind to different styles.”
Final-year Footwear Design student Stephanie Douglas
Footwear Design student Stephanie Douglas was delighted to win The Worshipful Company of Cordwainers ‘Design Innovation’ Award and Outstanding Student Award.
The 23-year-old from Taiwan did an Art & Design (Foundation Studies) course at DMU before embarking on her degree. She now plans to go on to do a Design Innovation MA.
Stephanie said: “I feel really good, I’m so happy.
“My third year at DMU has been a really positive experience; I’ve been taken out of my comfort zone and have learnt so much because of it. It really has been the peak of my education.”
