DMU unveils generous grants for Indian students

Generous grants to study. Sharp savings on fees. The chance to supercharge CVs with real-world paid work placements.

These are some of the enticing deals for international students applying to De Montfort University Leicester (DMU), which was this year named as one of the 150 best young universities in the world.

INSET discounts

A bumper package of January discounts has been unveiled by DMU, including scholarships up to the value of £5,000 and a £1,500 reduction in fees for all students from India. The university also offers internships to give talented graduates the edge in the workplace.

MBA student Mohammed Ajmal Kuyilan snapped up the chance of a three-month placement at the university’s International Office, as part of DMU’s Global Interns programme.

He works 10 hours a week as part of the team that handles all aspects of recruitment and marketing for international students.

“This is about getting practical experience to go with the MBA theory,” he said. “And that boosts my CV.”

The 22-year-old, a graduate in commerce from Calicut University in Kerala, applied to study at DMU on the personal recommendation of a friend from India. “The best MBAs in the world are provided in England,” he said, “and my friend said coming to De Montfort could be a golden opportunity for me.”

“I like the diversity in both the university and the city,” he said. “I live in the Narborough Road area, and that has shopkeepers from all over the world. It’s the most multicultural street in Britain”.

The Vice-Chancellor of DMU travelled to India last month, as part of the official delegation to India-UK TECH Summit, South Asia’s largest technology conference, which was opened by the Indian PM Narendra Modi and his British counterpart, Theresa May.

During his trip he assured prospective students of a warm welcome in the UK. Alumni from DMU’s MBA Global course were at a packed event in the Indian capital to celebrate the importance of international students and international collaboration.

Prof Shellard said: “At DMU, our bond with India is particularly strong: we have more than 200 current students from India, more than 5,000 Indian alumni and our city of Leicester is greatly enriched by deep links with the sub-continent.

DMU also works directly supports some of the poorest communities in India through the DMU Square Mile India initiative.  Square Mile India, which was launched in February this year, draws upon DMU research and skills to produce positive change for thousands of people in some of the poorest and most vulnerable families in the region of Gujarat.

Projects include connecting remote rural villages to sustainable energy resources, providing health outreach to hundreds with eyesight and hearing problems and supporting a home for 120 vulnerable children in Ahmedabad.

Mohammed’s MBA course lasts 18 months, and he is determined to return to Kerala armed with both the qualification and the on-the-job experience to succeed in marketing.

“I’d recommend the Global Intern role at De Montfort University to anyone back home,” he said. “It’s a great opportunity for everyone.”
