Hundreds of people celebrated the best of local industry at the annual Leicester Mercury Business Awards – and De Montfort University Leicester (DMU) took centre stage to reward one thrilled organisation for the work it does in the community.

Businesses from world leaders to start-ups came together at the city’s Platinum Suite to champion success and show how the local economy is thriving and that the knock-on effects are far reaching.
DMU, whose Faculty of Business and Law is highly-respected for nurturing future business leaders, was a headline sponsor of the celebratory evening.
The university also sponsored the Contribution to the Community Award in recognition of the work it does through schemes such as DMU Square Mile, #DMUlocal and DMU Square Mile India – all designed to use the skills and experience of students and academics to make a difference.
Cillian Ryan, PVC Dean of the Faculty of Business and Law, presented the prize to Hinckley and Rugby Building Society, which has been shortlisted four times.

The building society offers staff three days a year of volunteering time to help out charities or community groups and offers customers a savings account which helps three local hospices. Last year it initiated a national fundraising drive to help children displaced by the war in Syria.
Professor Ryan said: “One of the reasons Hinckley and Rugby Building Society won is because they have consistently, year after year, made a significant contribution to the community. It’s something DMU recognises and embraces as an institution through its DMU Square Mile and DMUlocal projects.”
Stewart Heeley, of Hinckley and Rugby, said: “We are all absolutely thrilled. It has come as a really pleasant surprise. It is the fourth time we have made the shortlist and we were convinced we would always be the bridesmaid! It is great to be picked out from a really deserving group of candidates and by an institution like DMU that also does so much with the community.”
