A fantastic festival celebrating the best of British culture is to be hosted by DMU this month – and it has all been organised by our students.

Giants of poetry, theatre, dance, literature, sport, film and television are lined up to make appearances during the Cultural eXchanges Festival 2015 which has been put together by third year undergraduates studying the Festivals Management module of DMU’s Arts and Festival Management degree.

Britain’s poet laureate Dame Carol Ann Duffy, stage and screen actress Claire Bloom, who famously played Lady Anne opposite Sir Lawrence Olivier in his film Richard III, The X Factor’s online presenter Luke Franks, comedian Ishi Khan Jackson, rapper and star of ITV’s Law and Order UK Doc Brown, Rosemary Squire, who was ranked top of this year’s The Stage 100 list of the most powerful people in theatre, and Kieran Smith, the creative director of the controversial Channel 4 programme Make Leicester British, are among the dozens of guests lined up to appear at venues across DMU between Monday 23 and Friday 27 February.

Other participating venues include Curve, which will host an exclusive peek behind the scenes of the theatre’s much anticipated world premiere of Adrian Mole The Musical, Phoenix Square, which will host the debut film by DMU graduate Paul Gosling, called The Monochrome Spy, and the New Walk Museum, which is hosting the Sevenwonders art project in collaboration with DMU’s Fine Art and Photography Research Group.

The brochure for this year’s festival has just been launched and tickets are on sale now.

Student Ruby Harrison, who is among the ten third years planning, marketing and running the festival, said: “The team has worked really hard to put on this year’s event and we are all proud of what has been achieved so far. It is amazing to see what a team of just ten students can achieve.

“To think that names such as Dame Carol Anne Duffy, Doc  Brown and Claire Bloom will be here in person is exciting for everyone involved in Festivals Management and I know people will find that the dozens of events we have crammed into  just five days are both entertaining and illuminating.

“It has been an amazing learning experience for us and being given the chance to put on a full scale festival and apply the skills we have learned on the course is such a brilliant opportunity – even though it has been exhausting.

“The team would appeal to anyone interested in our celebration of Britain’s vast cultural landscape to read the brochure, see what appeals to them and book their seats as soon as possible.”

This year is the 14th year of Cultural eXchanges at DMU. It is organised by students to promote closer ties between the university and the city and celebrate the best of British culture and its influence on both a local and global scale.
