DMU Masterplan

Summary of Development

DMU has recently secured an 8 year planning permission extension to allow continued improvement and consolidation of its buildings and create a first class teaching and research campus.

The £70m proposals involve reconfiguration of the Fletcher Complex to create a new building for the Faculty of Art, Design and Humanities; enhancement of the recently created pedestrianised area at the heart of the Campus; demolition of 1 Mill Lane Science Block and Technical Studies Building to create a new public open space; completion of the refurbishment of 1 Mill Lane Main Building; and the introduction of further public realm improvements. This will complement and enhance the major projects delivered under the original Masterplan 1, i.e. development of the Campus Centre Building, re-alignment of the inner Ring-Road and creation of Magazine and Hawthorn Squares, and Masterplan 2, development of the Hugh Aston Building, development of the PACE building and, as part of a joint venture with the NHS, creation of a new Medical Centre.

The Masterplan area stretches from Oxford Street (East) to Bede Island (West) and borders the Conservation Area around Castle Park and the riverside to the north and the Leicester Royal Infirmary to the South. Version three of the Masterplan will be created when the next phase of development commences in 2013/14.

Current and new buildings will define the proposed open spaces will be designed to improve the localised area bringing life to the streets and squares. Ground floor levels may provide space for bars, cafés, shops and other interactive services.

Refurbishments

In addition to our Masterplan proposals, the University is continually seizing on other opportunities to further improve the Campus. For example, the former William Baker Factory (now known as the John Whitehead Building) was acquired and completely refurbished in 2008 for occupation by central support departments and teaching.

Other high profile refurbishments include the creation of two Learning Zones in Kimberlin Library and adjacent Eric Wood Building. A further Learning Zone in The Greenhouse and the complete renewal and extension of the Edith Murphy Building as a new School of Nursing and Midwifery for the Faculty of Health & Life Sciences.
