If your child is looking to join DMU, you’ll want to know a bit more about the city they’re going to be living in.
In Leicester, your child will have the best of both worlds with a campus where everything’s in one place and also on the doorstep of the city centre.
Leicester is a great place to be a student and scores highest among East Midlands cities for work-life balance
(Good Growth for Cities Index, 2025). It’s also an exciting place for future careers and is ranked the 10th best city
in England to start a small business (Brandgility, 2025).
Leicester’s central location is also great for easy travel to cities such as London, Birmingham and Nottingham. Both
the train and bus station are located in the city centre, a short distance from campus.
We understand that you’ll have concerns about their safety and happiness and we want to reassure you that we also take
those things seriously.
Your child will feel safe on our city centre campus
[link to safety on campus page] where everything is in one place and just a short walk
away. We have a security team that’s available 24/7 plus a dedicated campus police officer.
All accommodation halls have either staff on duty around the clock or a 24-hour on-call service so your child can feel
safe and you have peace of mind. All halls also have CCTV and access codes/door entry systems for additional safety and
security.
Unlike bigger cities, Leicester is an affordable place to be a student. DMU’s accommodation costs are among the
lowest, with prices starting from £95 per week.
Shops, restaurants, cinemas and leisure activities are all just a short walk away so your child will not need to
spend much on travelling. Also, the bus and train stations are within walking distance so they can get home to visit
easily.
With an on-campus employment agency and paid internships available at the university, there’s lots of opportunities
for your child to find part-time work to give them an income. Plus, our block teaching timetable gives them free time
for a job, if that’s what they choose to do.
If your child is struggling with a href="/Information-for-parents/fees-and-finance-for-parents-and-carers.aspx">finances, we have teams who can help with advice on budgeting and
accessing funding and scholarships.
Leicester is a city that offers something for everyone – no matter what they’re into. Whether your
child is a social butterfly, the quiet type, creative, active, outdoorsy, a foodie or into arts and culture – they'll
find their happy place.
From museums and theatres, coffee shops, bars and clubs, to shops, sports, and parks – Leicester has it all, so your
child can make the most of student life, in and outside of their studies.
