Safety in the city

We understand that your child’s safety is hugely important to you – and it is to us too. It’s going to be a big factor when looking at universities and Leicester is well-known as an inclusive, student-friendly city.

The central location of our well-lit campus means your child is only ever a short walk between accommodation halls, the buildings where they’ll study, and the city centre. There is a strong sense of community on campus, while still having everything a city centre has to offer on the doorstep.

We work in partnership with our students, staff and the local community to create a safe environment for study, work and leisure. We have a close working relationship with Leicestershire Constabulary and its local neighbourhood team and are a member of the Leicestershire ‘Stamp it Out’ Hate Crime Partnership led by Leicestershire Constabulary.

Campus security

The DMU security team provides an effective security service, providing a safe and secure campus for all staff, students and visitors.

We have a proactive 24/7 security team ready to respond to any concerns with a police officer dedicated to the campus. They are supported by the neighbourhood policing team working from the nearby Hinckley Road Police Station.

Members of our security team and the campus police officer regularly patrol halls of residence and campus buildings. The team also:

  • Operate a sophisticated CCTV surveillance system in a purpose-built control room
  • Monitor and control of access to buildings outside of core hours
  • Provide security and personal safety advice and training to staff, students and visitors

Reporting an incident

If your child witnesses or is involve in an incident, they can contact our security team by:

  • calling on 0116 2577642 (extension 7642)
  • emailing at security@dmu.ac.uk
  • visiting their reception in the Estates Services building, opposite the Campus Centre and Gateway House.

They are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week – it’s a good idea for your child to add the phone number to their contacts so they have it to hand, if they need it.

Other support

All students are made aware that DMU does not tolerate, and will investigate any reports of, violent, indecent, disorderly, threatening, abusive or offensive behaviour or language. Similarly, students are made aware that if they report any incidents, it will be taken seriously.

DMU’s Mandala Project can signpost students towards practical support if they experience sexual violence, including rape and sexual assault, domestic abuse, including so called ‘honour crime’, forced marriage and coercive control, or sexual harassment including stalking, unwanted contact, abusive language and behaviours on campus which create an intimidating environment.

Accommodation security

All halls have either staff on duty around the clock or a 24-hour on-call service so your child can feel safe and you have peace of mind. All halls also have CCTV and access codes/door entry systems for additional safety and security.
