Talented Business and Law graduates rewarded for extra-special contribution to faculty

High-flying Business and Law graduates enjoyed a double celebration when they were presented with awards after collecting their degrees.

Family, friends and sponsors from local industry attended the prizegiving ceremony to celebrate students who had contributed to the faculty through academic excellence and citizenship.

Recipients included Mildred Hauck, who flew in from Italy for the event. She was awarded Best Student Performance on MA International Relations as well as the Sue Owen Memorial Prize, which recognised the role she played supporting her peers.

She said: "I'm really happy. I did an undergraduate degree in communications in my home country of Germany and I wanted to work for the UN so came here for my master's.

"It's one thing to study International Relations but another to experience it, which I did at DMU because I was studying with people from everywhere. I really experienced being a citizen of the world!"

Mildred, who was a course representative, student and brand ambassador, added: "Straight after my degree I got an internship at the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change in Bonn and now I have a job in Italy at the European Food Safety Authority, an agency of the EU."

Fellow award-winner Elizabeth Ogozi said studying at DMU helped her achieve "something I didn't think I could".

After collecting her prize for Best Student Performance on the MA Diplomacy and World Order programme, she said: "I studied International Relations in Nigeria for my first degree and I wanted to do something more advanced. DMU offered a course I could completely relate to.

"I had an amazing time here and have created so many memories. I have now moved to London and am working for the Nigerian Government.

"I didn't see the award coming!"

Afreen Mehdi, who passed the Legal Practice Course (LPC) with distinction, said it was a "nice surprise" to receive the prize for Best Student Performance on the Commercial Property elective.

She said: "I studied for the LPC part-time over two years while working my way through my training contract. It's really useful to do the LPC at the same time - it makes so much more sense."

When she qualifies and gets her practice certificate next month, Afreen will be working in real estate finance at Shakespeare Martineau, a top 50 UK law firm.

PVC/Dean of the Faculty of Business and Law, Dr Warren Manning, said it was always difficult to select winners from the wealth of talented graduates.

He said: "We are proud of the achievements of all our graduates but wish to celebrate in particular those of you who have contributed in a special way to the faculty.

"I would also like to thank all our sponsors for their continuing support to students in this faculty."
