The Chancellors Concert is set to mark a significant moment in De Montfort University Leicester (DMU)’s unique partnership with the world-renowned Philharmonia Orchestra.
Hundreds of DMU staff and students will join DMU Chancellor The Baroness Lawrence of Clarendon OBE and Vice-Chancellor Professor Dominic Shellard for the inaugural event today.
Ahead of the concert, Vice-Chancellor Professor Dominic Shellard will speak at a reception celebrating the partnership DMU signed with the Philharmonia in late 2016.
The partnership is offering a wealth of opportunities for students and staff to engage with projects and initiatives with many already reaping the benefits.
Just last month, members of the Philharmonia joined the DMU Orchestra for a historic concert at Her Majesty’s Prison (HMP) Leicester.
Members of the Philharmonia Adrian Varela and Gijs Kramers will return to perform at the Chancellors Concert this Wednesday.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Dominic Shellard said: “I am very proud to attend today’s concert in honour of our Chancellor Doreen Lawrence.
“Our partnership with the Orchestra will deliver a wealth of opportunities for our students and develop links between musicians and staff from our two organisations.”

The Chancellor’s Concert is just one of many Philharmonia Orchestra performances to be held in the city this year, which marks the 20th anniversary of them being in residence in Leicester.
It is hoped that the Chancellor’s Concert will become an annual event.
Conducted by Karl-Heinz Steffens, the 2017 Chancellor’s Concert features an impressive programme featuring Mendelssohn’s dramatic ‘Overture to Ruy Blas’, Schumann’s evergreen Piano Concerto, performed by the superlative Pianist, David Fray and concluding with the inspiring Brahms 3rd Symphony.
Head of DMU Music Chris Heighton said he is expecting a strong DMU showing for the residency concert: “The inaugural Chancellor’s Concert makes a significant moment in DMU’s partnership with the Philharmonia Orchestra.
“It will bring together students and members of staff from across the University for what we hope will be an annual celebration in the DMU calendar.”
A unique Student Ambassadors project will also see a DMU student working behind the scenes at Wednesday’s concert.
Inacio Martinelli said: “Being a student ambassador allows me to be in close contact with the Philharmonia's team and learn with some of the best professionals in the field. I am honoured and very excited to take part in this project.”
Over the last few weeks, students and staff have had the opportunity to win 50 pairs of tickets for the unique event which has seen huge interest.
