Square Mile's Linh wins Inspirational Student Award for her work helping pupils

DMU is celebrating our amazing students who have transformed lives through DMU Square Mile. Today it’s the turn of the Nguyen Thuy Linh, winner of Inspirational Student 2015

As a Master’s student, Nguyen Thuy Linh has a hectic schedule – but she still finds time to help others and become an ambassador for DMU Square Mile, which shares the skills of staff and students to help the community.

Linh, who is studying MSc International Business and Corporate Social Responsibility, is a dedicated volunteer at New College, where she works with pupils.

She helps pupils who need one to one support, working closely with them to improve their skills, ability and confidence.

Writing in her Square Mile blog  Linh said: “Initially, I thought I came to help my mentees. In fact, they helped me and made my day.

“Thanks to the mentoring programme in New College Leicester, I am convinced that when I am stressed, I should just do something helpful.”

As well as mentoring she has volunteered to help with other Square Mile projects and credits the programme with helping her get involved in the Leicester community.

The Inspirational Student Award is presented to students who are “truly exemplary” in their attitude, commitment and achievements. David Hollis, operations manager with Square Mile, said Linh had been “a perfect ambassador for Square Mile.”

Linh, from Vietnam, said: “I had no idea that I was getting this award, it was such a nice surprise for me!

“The engagement that Square Miles brings is so good. I can meet different people and it means I have many different ways to meet people in the Leicester community.”
