Personal profile

Chris Goldsmith is a Senior Lecturer in International Relations at De Montfort University.  He is also responsible for the International Exchange programmes within the Faculty of Humanities and Admissions Tutor for Politics and International Relations.  Before coming to De Montfort, Chris spent two years working at Tyumen State University in Western Siberia, so he appreciates the balmy Leicester climate.

His research interests focus on the forces influencing the making of foreign policy, with a particular focus on Franco-British relations.  Ever since his undergraduate studies he has been fascinated about the differences in British and French foreign policy since the Second World War, which were so clearly demonstrated by the Iraq War.  This led to work on Britain’s role in the Suez Crisis of 1956, attitudes towards France’s colonial problems in the 1950s and the return of General De Gaulle in 1958.  He is currently writing about the role of perception in British policy towards France in the 1950s.

Chris teaches on a variety of modules at De Montfort.  In 2008/9 he will be leading modules on the Cold War and International Relations Theory in Year Two as well as supervising the Negotiated Study module in Year Three.  He also contributes to Year One teaching.  Having had a long-term interest in the use of information technology in the teaching of history and politics, he has recently gained funding for a project on the use of Web 2.0 tools to support student learning in Year One.  He is also keen on simulations, role play and the use of games in teaching.
