Overview

Hear from Senior Lecturer Kelly Hughes as she outlines the opportunities, benefits and unique features of the SQE LLM course at DMU.

We are no longer accepting applications to part-time entry of this course for September 2026.

This course is for students who hold a non-law degree but would like to pursue a career in law. This programme will be supported by the addition of an extra module, so you get up to speed with your fellow students on the LLM Legal Professional Practice, meaning you’ll achieve the same outcome.

This course is designed for graduates from non-law backgrounds who want to pursue a career in law. An additional introductory module will help you build the foundational legal knowledge needed to join the LLM Legal Professional Practice, ensuring you achieve the same outcomes as students with a law degree.

You will gain a strong understanding of legal practice, develop key professional skills, and explore contemporary issues facing the legal sector. Taught by experienced legal academics and practitioners, the course covers legal research, problem-solving, drafting, legal writing, client communication, and professional ethics.

The programme emphasises critical thinking, independent learning, and professional development, with opportunities to undertake a substantial research project in an area of interest. Employability is embedded throughout, helping you develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed for a successful career in law or related professional fields.

Graduate careers

If your goal is to become a solicitor in the modern day, our SQE LLM is an excellent choice.

The Solicitors Qualifying Examinations (SQEs), which this course prepares you for, are the centralised assessments that form part of the newly-introduced, four-stage route to becoming a solicitor in England and Wales. The SQEs will eventually replace the Legal Practice Course (LPC) and become the only way of qualifying as a solicitor in England and Wales.

Additionally, our SQE LLM students benefit from dedicated careers support in the form of an SQE Careers Tutor. They are a qualified solicitor, and will be able to offer you tailored careers advice, CV and cover letter support, and will work with you to help you achieve your goals.
