Partnerships and collaborations

We pride ourselves on undertaking research with real world impact. In order to support this aim, the School of Computer Science and Informatics works with industry and professional associations as well as other national and international academic institutions.

Our researchers undertake projects funded by a wide range of funding bodies including: EPSRC, ESRC, Innovate UK, Horizon 2020, AHRC, NERC, Leverhulme Trust and the Royal Society. We also collaborate with industry partners from a range of different sectors, including Airbus, Deloitte UK, HORIBA MIRA, IBM, Network Rail and Epic Games, to name a few.

Researchers in the school also work with other internationally leading universities, such as the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (Germany), the EPFL (Switzerland), the University of Lille (France), the University of Twente (Netherlands), University of Malaga (Spain), Clemson University (USA) and Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics (China).

Significant collaborations within the school and its research institutes:

  • The school offers two Degree Apprenticeship programmes – the Digital and Technology Solutions Professional and Cyber Security Technical Professional. Current apprentices on these programmes are from large multinational organisations such as BT, IBM and Siemens.
  • The Centre for Computing and Social Responsibility has strong national and international research networks including the University of Oxford, the University of Nottingham as well as multinational companies such as VTT (Finland) or Tecnalia (Spain).
  • Academics in the Institute of Artificial Intelligence are working on an “Audience of the Future” project in collaboration with the Royal Shakespeare Company, the Philharmonic Orchestra, as well as the games companies - Epic Games, Punch Drunk and Magic Leap.

We offer a range of industry-sponsored academic qualifications as well as short CPD training courses. Our academics undertake contract research and consultancy activities for companies. We engage with industry partners on KTP projects, funded by Innovate UK; as well as supporting applications for funding in relation to research and innovation collaborations, such as through the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund.
