We can say we are pleased to be supporting the Springboard Project, a project researching gender based violence in gymnastics across four countries (Holland, Portugal, Sweden and the UK).

We were pleased to participate in the Yalla Banat event in Bahrain at the Bahrain International Circuit promoting the Empowerment of Women. The Director of CRISTAL took part in the World Record Breaking largest all female car parade around the track and sat on a panel to discuss her career in motorsport and sport more generally.

The BASL DMU conference, attended by over 80 delegates from professional, academic and non-profit backgrounds and it was a pleasure to welcome a number of students from various universities studying sports law to the lively and engaging event. The afternoon conference centred around athlete care. We listened to sessions given by Dr David McArdle (University of Stirling), Mr Anthony Metzer QC (Goldsmith Chambers), Jonathan Broom-Edwards (GB Team Paralympian) and Liz Bloor (Netball Players Association). Our panel session at the end was ably chaired by Kevin Carpenter (Captivate) and our very own Jonathan Merritt gave the opening presentation discussing equine athletes.

We have commenced with the appointments of Visiting Fellows. So far we have appointed Dr David McArdle, Anthony Metzer, Emma Kavanagh, Tracey McCillen and Dr Andy Harvey. We are very pleased to have such esteemed colleagues on board to support the aims and objectives of CRISTAL.

CRISTAL are pleased to have further cemented DMU’s working relationship with the British Association for Sport and Law. We have recently announced the launch of the BASL DMU Sports Law Case Digest, an annual publication giving a clear understanding of the most important sports law cases in the preceding 12 months. DMU sports law students all have the opportunity to contribute to the new initiative.

The Centre of Research for Innovation, Sport, Technology and Law have welcomed its first PhD request and are looking forward to hosting the Netball Players Association’s inaugural gala dinner at the Castle in June 2019.

We are pleased to see the launch of the world first master’s degree programme Business of Motorsport MA which saw its inaugural intake come together in registration week ready for a fulfilling one year course. The students are getting ready to spend a week in Bahrain for their 30 credit module ‘Site Visits and Motorsport Reflection’. The students will spend a day at Bell Helmets learning from the Aref Yazbek, MD, the Head of Human Resources, Ali Shehabi and Bell’s central production team. They will also spend two days at the Bahrain International Circuit preparing for a major event and spectating. Another day will be spent with Mark Hughes, a specialist motorsport consultant understanding the process of strategic planning of new motorsport events. CRISTAL is pleased to announce it is moving closer to launching PG Certs and PG Diplomas in Bahrain and Dubai.

The LLM students and BASL students continue to mix well at the Saturday sessions, hosted at DMU, with students learning much from one another. CRISTAL hosted a small round-table at the recent Study Day which BASL and LLM students enjoyed.
