Rewards and benefits
The day-to-day experience of DMU colleagues is of great importance to us and there are many different benefits and rewards available.
Pay and reward
In line with our commitment to the public good, DMU was one of the first higher education institutions to adopt the voluntary Living Wage when it was introduced. We have been paying it as a minimum to all directly employed staff so that they enjoy a fair wage that is considerably higher than the government's statutory National Living Wage.
The university believes that its employees are its most valuable asset and the pay progression process is designed to reward staff whose contribution exceeds that normally expected of their role on a sustained basis. Academic and professional services staff can apply for either accelerated increments within their pay grade or contribution points, which are additional incremental points above their pay grade.
There is access to excellent pension schemes through the Local Government Pension Scheme (for Professional Services staff) or the Teachers' Pension Scheme (for Academics).
The DMU Rewards platform offers a huge range of discounts. All you’ll need to do is register to explore the thousands of offers available exclusively to DMU employees. These include money off at major retailers, travel deals, days out and much more.
All DMU staff with a dmu.ac.uk email address can claim student discounts at hundreds of national and local retailers through the NUS Extra/Totum card. It costs from just £12 a year to register.
Health and wellbeing
Our fantastic award-winning Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Leisure Centre offers a range of memberships for staff. You can also pay through a salary deduction, and claim an online discount in order to access gym facilities, swimming pool and many fitness and relaxation classes

There are also facilities on campus for cyclists, such as secure bike storage and showers.
Work life balance
There are usually 13 bank holiday and concessionary days on top of annual leave entitlement. We also provide a range of flexible working options, for example, to support caring responsibilities and wider work-life balance. Our Flexible Working Policy gives eligible employees an opportunity to request a change to their working pattern, such as a reduction or variation of working hours, or working from a different location (e.g. home).
#DMUStaffSocial: From must-see theatre shows, to coach trips, a Christmas party, keep-fit classes and other activities on campus, #DMUStaffSocial offers a large number of diverse events and discounts throughout the year. They’re a great opportunity for DMU staff to spend some of their free time trying something new and having fun with their colleagues, friends and families.
We have vibrant and active staff networks which focus and support staff from our diverse backgrounds. These groups provide: a forum for consultation and discussion; a great opportunity to network with colleagues from across the institution; personal and professional development, and help to inform the university on policy and procedure. We currently have staff networks for Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) Staff, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, Queer + (LGBTQ+) staff and allies, Female staff (DMUWomen), Disability and a Wellbeing network. We also have Christian and Muslim chaplains, who provide spiritual support, advice and encouragement to staff and students of all faiths and none.
