Keeping your bicycle safe on campus

Many people cycle to DMU regularly, but a large number of them are failing to secure their bikes in the safest manner.

Here are some top tips for keeping your bike secure:

  • Use the campus cycle storage facilities, some of which are lockable. If you're leaving campus then take your bike with you - don't leave bikes parked on campus overnight.
  • Never leave your bike unlocked; even for a few minutes.
  • Lock your bike in a busy, well-lit area covered by CCTV and use a good quality cycle lock (such as a Sold Secure Gold rated lock). Whilst stocks last, students can get a free D-lock from the Estates Services Building.
  • Learn how to lock your bike correctly. Ensure that you fill as much of the lock shackle as possible, don't just lock the top tube to the stand.
  • Keep a record of your bike's make, model and frame number and take advantage of free security marking promotions on campus.
  • Remember that no cycle facility is 100% thief-proof; make sure your cycle is insured against theft whilst on campus. Some home contents insurance policies may be adapted to include bikes.

Please report any suspicious behaviour around the cycle facilities to Security, and do not let anyone into the locked cycle stores unless you are sure they are meant to be there.
