We headed over to Beaumont Park this week for a Rugby Union double header. The Women were up first, playing University of Derby in the cup quarter-final.
Derby made strong progress early on and scored two tries, with a quick sprinter on their team making difficult work for the DMU Women. But they didn’t give up, scoring a try and a conversion just before the half-time whistle bringing the score to 7-33.
The second half was a tough fight for the team, but there were lots of positives in their performance with some excellent passes and very impressive tackles. A valiant effort from #TeamDMU but when the final whistle blew the score stood at 12-54 Derby.
There was obviously a bit of a theme that afternoon with Midlands competitors - up next were DMU Rugby Union Men’s 2nd against Nottingham Trent. After such a clear day it was cold outside, but plenty of supporters had managed to make it over regardless to cheer them on.
The support obviously did the trick as in the first few minutes DMU had already scored their first try and conversion kick, and it was looking good for our home team, but they couldn’t afford to get too complacent; Trent were not far behind, and were proving a strong competitor.
With 13 minutes until half-time Trent scored another try and inched ahead into the lead, but when the whistle blew the score stood at a close 17-21 in favour of Trent. DMU knew there was plenty of time to turn things around, they just needed to keep focused and pile the pressure on.
The teams stayed neck and neck in the second-half, scoring one try after the other. We saw some lovely rugby played by DMU including some spectacular kicks, and the boys really pulled together as a team. And then, at the last minute, DMU seized the lead with a penalty - bringing the final score to 41-40, a fantastic effort and a very well fought and hard-earned win for #TeamDMU.
