Race Equality Charter

The Race Equality Charter Mark is a charter mark created by the national higher education charity, the Equality Challenge Unit.  The charter “aims to improve the representation, progression and success of minority ethnic staff and students within higher education”.

There are five guiding principles which underpin the Charter.  For further information on these, please visit the national Race Equality Charter website.

In 2015, DMU participated in the Race Equality Charter pilot.  More than 30 institutions volunteered to participate in the pilot; of this, 21 institutions made submissions.  Eight successfully obtained Bronze, including DMU.  There are three levels of award; Bronze, Silver and Gold. Only one institution has gained an award since the pilot process (Bronze level).

Ben Browne, who led the Race Equality Charter group at DMU said: "Our achievement of the Race Equality Charter Bronze award is recognition of this university’s hard work and an endorsement for our commitment to equality of opportunity for all our diverse student and staff communities. We have pledged to take action to strive to make DMU a place where our students and staff reach their full potential. The achievement of this award is just the beginning for us and I am personally committing to taking action at all levels to ensure that we meet our commitments.”

The Race Equality Charter aims to inspire a strategic approach to making cultural and systemic changes that will make a real and sustainable difference to BAME staff and students. This includes DMU’s projects around closing the BAME attainment gap and Dare to Do, the BAME student mentoring scheme.

The charter was introduced after calls from the Higher Education Race Action Group, an organisation composed of diversity professionals, academics, and students, with an interest in racial equality in HE.
