Health experts host webinar to answer covid questions

Health professionals are running a free online webinar tonight to help give the facts behind coronavirus following a number of cases in schools.

Willows Health, the county’s largest healthcare organisation, is bringing together expert panel members to provide information on preparing for a possible second spike of the virus this winter.

The event is being run by Willows Health, De Montfort University Leicester (DMU) and Leicester Primary Care Networks tonight from 7pm. You can register here.

It comes as Health Secretary Matt Hancock has announced its latest review of the extended Leicester lockdown will be announced tomorrow (Thursday).

DMU Professor Ivan Browne, Leicester’s Director of Public Health and visiting professor at DMU, will give an update on the pandemic in Leicester, and what we can expect over winter and efforts being made to protect people.

GP Aruna Garcea, clinical director of Leicester City, will look at how local NHS services are preparing for the coming months; Professor Mayur Lakhani will share details of the biggest flu vaccination programme in living memory and Sue Welford, principal education officer at Leicester City Council, will talk about how schools across the city are taking measures to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

Professor Browne said: “We have to continue to push messages particularly around household contact, around isolating if you have symptoms. As people come together in lots of environments such as schools, we will see cases emerge.

“If we look at the numbers across the country and in Leicester, the latest data, what’s been interesting is we are seeing more of a general spread in the city, a general uprise which speaks to that point of people getting more lax. The reality is the virus is still there.”
