Designer-maker students stage their own exhibition

Second year Design Crafts students will be opening their own show in the city this week thanks to a partnership between De Montfort University Leicester (DMU) and LCB Depot.

Called Crafted, the exhibition has been organised, promoted and brought together by the students. It will feature showcase a selection of the various materials that make up the crafts industry; ceramics, textiles, glass, wood, metalsmithing and jewellery.

The exhibition will run from today (Thursday 2 May) to 16 May. Collectively, the handcrafted pieces display a body of developing knowledge and understanding, combining age old techniques with modern, digital processes. Among the exhibits - which are nearly all for sale, or the artists can be commissioned - are jewellery created from 3D printing, glass chased with silver, ceramics which are inspired by sketches of Italian renaissance art to a designer's bright, colourful celebration of their grandma.

Student Chloe Rogers said, “Working towards Crafted this year has been a hugely insightful in my developing practice as a ceramicist. To have had the opportunity to not only be part of a public exhibition, but also be involved in the organising, promoting and curation of the show has opened more doors towards the career as a contemporary craftsperson I aspire to.”

This is the fourth exhibition of DMU students’ work hosted at the LCB as part of its programme to showcase the work of talented young people. Photography, fashion and Fine Art have all been featured in successful shows throughout recent weeks.

Chris Slowe of LCB Depot said: "It's been really fantastic working with the students these past months. It's very exciting to see what the next generation of artists and designers are coming up with, and the commitment and professionalism with which they organised, promoted and delivered the exhibitions leaves me in no doubt that they'll go on to have successful careers in their fields."

Alongside ‘Crafted’ is ‘New Work’ a showcase of local professional designer makers. Their work was selected and curated from an open submission by a panel consisting of DMU students and a local independent maker and will be displayed throughout LCB Depot’s other spaces.

* LCB Depot is open from 9am - 5.30pm on weekdays, plus during its regular event. Easy Saturday family day runs every month at LCB Depot and will take place on Saturday May 11 from noon to 4pm.
