One thousand memories of New York City and another reason to #loveDMU

Unforgettable New York experiences were enjoyed by more than 1,000 De Montfort University Leicester (DMU) students. The trip is the biggest #DMUglobal trip so far and is thought to be the largest-ever international visit run by a UK university

For the New York experience, staff from each course organised bespoke activities for their students, using the wealth of iconic places and companies gathered in the Big Apple to offer spectacular experiences, bringing classroom theory to colourful life.

Many of these were opportunities were simply unavailable to the tourist – from getting the inside scoop at the New York Times, to going deep underground, marvelling at the massive East Side Access subway expansion.

Among the academic activities linked to their studies which the various groups undertook was a walk by Game Art students along the city’s famous 1.45-mile High Line.

They found inspiration for their future coursework by witnessing New York’s dramatic city skylines and urban environments first from ground level and then from the High Line – a former railroad converted into a linear park offering above road level views across Manhattan.

They took photographs and generated ideas to replicate when they later produce their own virtual-reality games.

Bethany Cox, 23, added: "There are so many raw textures such as rust and grit and New York is a truly lived in city which is constantly changing."

Another group were wowed by seeing Chewbacca’s head from the original Star Wars movies’ costume department during a visit to the Museum of the Moving Image, as well as many other fascinating displays.
