Most people are counting down the days until Christmas – but for 1,000 students at De Montfort University Leicester (DMU) it is January 3 they are waiting for.
That is when the university’s
#DMUglobal trip to New York begins, which is the latest and largest overseas visit as part of DMU’s groundbreaking #loveinternational campaign.
All 1,000 students and staff will be literally making a stand in Central Park to show that openness and tolerance are crucial values in our society. Students from 45 different nationalities will be represented at the event.
It is part of a week packed full of academic activities, a Q&A with Lee Child, one of the world’s bestselling authors, and tours of some of the world’s most iconic buildings.
Professor Dominic Shellard, Vice-Chancellor of DMU, will be leading the visit. He said: “Our desire to engage with the whole of the world, notwithstanding Brexit and calls for insularity, is one of our guiding principles.
“The DMU community is enriched by our students and staff, who come from more than 135 countries. We launched our #loveinternational campaign to highlight our commitment to welcoming students and staff from all over the world and being a citizen of the world means opposing discrimination and prejudice in whatever form they take.”
Students from 17 different academic courses will be taking part in activities aligned to their studies. They include Journalism and Media students visiting the New York Times and Film Studies students learning about New York’s role in cinema while Engineering students will be visiting Grand Central Station to learn about the effects of flooding.
