When he did not get the A-level results he’d hoped for, David Potter knew where he wanted to call first – De Montfort University Leicester (DMU).
He had been to an open day and been impressed with the university and Leicester itself. Now one year on, he’s discovered a sporting passion and is raring to begin a
BSc Computer Science after successfully completing a foundation year.
He said: “Clearing is nerve wracking, but you have to think positive if you don’t get the results. DMU was the first place I called and they were very helpful. I had been to an open day so I knew the place and I liked Leicester as a city.”
The foundation year, which bridges the gap between A-level and first-year undergraduate studies, provides a grounding in subjects including 3D animation, web development, computer modelling and mathematics.
David’s background in maths – he studied it at A-level – helped him quickly grasp the concepts in Computer Science and he is keen to begin tackling more challenging material.
His proudest achievement has been joining the university rowing club, which he signed up to during freshers’ week. The tough training includes 5am starts twice a week and every evening rowing, working with a full-time coach.
David, from London, said: “It’s been really good. I never thought about sport, but now I’ve found something that I’m willing to devote my time to. I think it’s helped with my studies, too, making me more disciplined and it helps with time management.”
