Hundreds of students try out free sports sessions

Scores of students are taking advantage of sports and fitness taster sessions - which are now free - thanks to Campus330, run by De Montfort Students' Union (DSU).

In the first four weeks, more than 900 students have taken part in a variety of sports and activities including basketball, indoor football, circuits, boxing and pilates.

From now until Sunday 13 December, students and staff can turn up to any of the activities whenever they want, as long as they bring their ID.

Jake Betts, Sports Development Coordinator at DSU, said: "The response from students has been really positive and we have had a great attendance so far.

"Campus330 allows you to give an activity a go/try something new, whilst not having the commitment of attending every week. The main aim of the programme is to promote an active healthy lifestyle whilst having fun at the same time."

The Campus 330 programme will be back after Christmas with a new timetable of activities to get involved in.

Friday was the turn of RUN DMU Beginners which helps people build up to running 5km. Led by second year DMU student Chad Hutchinson and supported by Kim Angell, a Running Activator for Leicestershire and Rutland Sport, it is a mix of walking, jogging based games and running from 5pm to 6pm.

Chad said: "We cater for first time runners, the idea of just running continuously can be a scary thought. We try to provide a mix of walking, jogging and running with the hope of increasing the length of time/distance they can run.

Students Mollie, Kiera and Gemma were back for a second week after trying RUN DMU last week and enjoying it. Joining them were Jo, Chrisa and Fran. Jo said, "I started running by myself but I thought it would be nice to do it as a group, and make a few friends along the way."
