Hundreds of students from across De Montfort University Leicester (DMU) packed into Bede Park for the festival, organised by DMU Indian Society and DMU Square Mile, which works to share the skills of staff and students with the community. Krishan Nama, president of DMU Indian Society, said: “It’s great to see so many people at this free event. It is a tremendous atmosphere and so many
different people coming to join in.

“We appreciate all that DMU is doing to support g us, through the Square Mile and the international office, as well as DSU for funding us and the council for giving us this park to use.

“It’s grown so much over the three years we have run this. In the first year we had 100, the next year there was 200 and today we have had up to 500.”

De Montfort Students’ Union provided 500 packets of coloured powder which the students used to decorate each other. The bright colours signify the triumph of light over dark.

Photography student Jess, Performing Arts student Jenna and Anna, a Biomedical Science student, joined in, decorating each other with colours. “It’s such a nice event,” said Jenna. “It’s great to see people having so much fun.”
