Experts from DMU’s Department of Accounting and Finance, led by Dr David Russell (pictured above) have analysed companies whose registered HQ is in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.

The resulting publication, Leicestershire’s Top 200 Companies 2015, has been published today (Tuesday 23 June) by the Leicester Mercury’s business team in association with Berkeley Insurance Group.

Using information gleaned from financial databases, data from Companies House and the firms themselves, the accounting team was able to rank the firms in order of turnover.

It comes as a new survey names Leicester as a business hotspot. The independent Enterprise Research Centre placed the city on a par with London in terms of the highest number of fast-growing firms, defined as those showing an annual employment growth of 20 per cent or more.

Dr Russell, who is also deputy Dean of the Faculty of Business and Law, said the diversity and spread of businesses in Leicestershire was an economic strength.

He added: “There is a very strong business base in Leicestershire and a good spread of businesses, which is an incredibly healthy aspect to note because it means that the county is not heavily reliant on one particular area.

“The table should provide interesting reading for those companies who are considering relocating to Leicester and Leicestershire as it suggests that the economic conditions in the region are healthy.”

The top 25 companies in the list employ 95,000 people in the UK and have a turnover of £20billion.

Tom Pegden, Leicester Mercury business editor, said: “Overseeing the list has the sobering effect of bringing every company together, showing the vast range of businesses out there and the remarkable financial and employment contributions they make to Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.”
