The field of archives is predominantly white, both in terms of researchers using archives, depositors giving materials to archives and people working in archives. This panel discussion brings together professionals and users of archives to discuss the experiences of people of colour, when encountering archives.

The panellists are:

  • Jenny Moran (panel chair) - is the Records Manager at DMU and has extensive experience working in the archives sector. She is also Diversity Lad on the Archives and Records Association Board.
  • Dr Lisa Palmer - is the Interim Director of The Stephen Lawrence Research Centre at DMU. She uses archives in her research and has also worked at the Library of Birmingham.
  • Marina Afonso - is an archivist currently working on a cataloguing project with us in Special Collections.
  • Holly Cooper - is currently working on a DPhil in History at the University of Oxford and is a Postgraduate Member of the Royal Historical Society (2022/23).
  • Hafsa Hirsi - My interest in African history, especially colonial and post-colonial histories, stems from my experiences as a history graduate. Working in and exploring black history-related archives has become one of my favourite passions.  Due to acquiring about and comprehending the impact of black history which depends on recognising the actual experiences of black people, I enjoyed researching them. I have also completed the young archivists' course, worked as a library trainee, and had the chance to work at DMU Archives and Special Collections.

This event is part of the Black History Month calendar. Please contact the DMU Events Office on eventsoffice@dmu.ac.uk if you have any questions.
